corrupted, 2018
Corrupted presents a visual metaphor for the underlying perversion of digital-era politics and the complicit use of technology to influence and sway the outcome of elections through fake news and dubious facts. To exemplify this perversion I created corrupted portraits of presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Through sanding and scratching, I physically altered DVD hardcopy source materials. As the player attempted to make sense of the damaged disc, I captured the resulting onscreen random images. I then placed the prints in gold lined keepsake boxes, or in the case of the “Presidential Portraits,” in gilded frames with gold overlays depicting flames of melting gold. My intent with this series is to document, depict and preserve the madness of an historical and radical shift in the political landscape.
